Review
The Gazette loves the Blue Star
Stylish eatery shines with excellent food, wine choice
By Tom Karpel, The Gazette
If you went to The Blue Star every day for a year and a half and ordered a different bottle of wine with each meal, there would still be several pages of untried wines on the wine list. That's more than 500, for those of you who have run out of fingers.
As you can tell, I did some counting while I was at this sleek, South Tejon Street eatery. What you can count on when you come here to eat is an impeccable meal with personalized service and bottle after bottle of beautiful wine.
But Blue Star, a local institution for the past decade, is about a lot more than the vino. It's also about the food, the look, the attitude. I don't want to call it "trendy," as that implies that it might be gone in a month. Let's just say it's as stylish a restaurant as you'll find in these parts, and the creativity expressed by the kitchen staff is unparalleled on the local dining scene.
The Blue Star is really three distinct environments in one building. There is the bar area, with its high tables and informal, though still beguiling, charm. A bottle of wine and some tapas from the menu would be time well-spent with friends after work. Further into the restaurant is the dining area: a little more formal, but by no means pretentious, and with some intimate tables along the walls. You and your significant other deserve at least one experience here in the immediate future. Lastly is the wine cellar, which is available for party bookings, private work get-togethers and other moderately sized gatherings. Yes, you are surrounded by all that wine; you can handle it.
You also can handle ordering from the menu, but just barely. There are so many attractive-sounding dishes with exotic (for Colorado Springs) ingredients, it will be difficult to choose.
Few local restaurants are this versatile. Whether it's a special-occasion dinner, a wine tasting, tapas after work or a dessert and coffee after a movie, Blue Star has it all covered with panache.
Tom's take: Supercreative food, awardwinning wine selection, stalwart service and chic make this one of the coolest, most versatile restaurants in town.
